
SODAPOJ at a momentary look
The
Somali Democratic Association For Protection of Journalists is an
independent, receptive, bendable non-profit organization founded
in 2004. We promote press freedom worldwide by defending the right
of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal.
How did SODAPOJ get established?
SODAPOJ
was founded in 2004 by a group of Somali Professionals working
together on a humanitarian basis in order to protest and proof
press freedom abuses, train and unite local journalists coupled
with the efforts of the International Community - to the most
disadvantaged in a war torn Somali society.
In
early 2004, a small group of Somali journalists worried by the
escalating violence against colleagues in Somalia decided to form
a unique entity, the Association for the Protection of
Journalists. Today, SODAPOJ, a non-partisan, non-profit
organization, is dedicated to defend journalists at local level by
monitoring and exposing attacks done to the media and on press
freedom.
As an organization, The Somali Democratic Association for
Protection of Journalists has a constitution, written policies
and procedures that simplify to carry out its activities.
SODAPOJ principles include democracy, transparency, shared
values, and accountability that make possible its well-being and
the confirmation of its activities.
How does SODAPOJ guard journalists?
By publicly revealing abuses against the press and by acting on
behalf of Captive and endangered journalists, SODAPOJ effectively
advocate for journalists and news organizations where attacks on
press freedom are occurring. SODAPOJ organizes vigorous protest at
all levels, when necessary, works behind the scenes through other
diplomatic channels to effectuate the required change. SODAPOJ
also publishes articles and news releases, special reports, the
most comprehensive survey of attacks against the Somali Press

does SODAPOJ get its information?
SODAPOJ has full-time program coordinator and staff working on the
monitoring of Somali press; They track developments through their
own independent research, fact-finding missions, and firsthand
contacts in the field, including reports from other journalists.
SODAPOJ shares information on breaking Somali cases with Somali
Media Stations in all over the country.
What Does SODAPOJ Believe?
SODAPOJ Believes the following aims:

of preventative programs and services for journalists deemed to
be at risk.

with all human right defenders working on the protection of the
journalists at local, regional and international levels.

appointed the responsibility to assist journalist risk

responsibility to assure the security and Right of Journalists.
Therefore SODAPOJ is primarily oriented in the realization of such
commitment.
Journalists must speak for themselves. We call on our Generation
to join as a community of professionals to clarify the purpose and
principles that distinguish our profession from other forms of
communication.
