SODAPOJ at a momentary look

The Somali Democratic Association For Protection of Journalists is an independent, receptive, bendable   non-profit organization founded in 2004. We promote press freedom worldwide by defending the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal.

How did SODAPOJ get established?

SODAPOJ was founded in 2004 by a group of Somali Professionals working together on a humanitarian basis in order to protest and proof press freedom abuses, train and unite local journalists coupled with the efforts of the International Community - to the most disadvantaged in a war torn Somali society.

In early  2004, a small group of Somali journalists worried by the escalating violence against colleagues in Somalia decided to form a unique entity, the Association for the Protection of  Journalists. Today, SODAPOJ, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, is dedicated to defend journalists at local level by monitoring and exposing attacks done to the media and on press freedom.

As an organization,  The Somali Democratic Association for Protection of Journalists has  a constitution, written  policies and procedures that simplify  to carry out its activities.

SODAPOJ principles include democracy, transparency, shared values,  and accountability that make possible its well-being  and the confirmation of its activities.

How does SODAPOJ guard journalists?

By publicly revealing abuses against the press and by acting on behalf of Captive and endangered journalists, SODAPOJ effectively advocate for   journalists and news organizations where attacks on press freedom are occurring. SODAPOJ organizes vigorous protest at all levels, when necessary, works behind the scenes through other diplomatic channels to effectuate the required change. SODAPOJ also publishes articles and news releases, special reports, the most comprehensive survey of attacks against the Somali Press

Where does SODAPOJ get its information?

SODAPOJ has full-time program coordinator and staff working on the monitoring of  Somali press; They track developments through their own independent research, fact-finding missions, and firsthand contacts in the field, including reports from other journalists. SODAPOJ shares information on breaking Somali cases with Somali Media Stations in all over the country.

What Does SODAPOJ Believe?

SODAPOJ Believes the following aims:

  • In the development of preventative programs and services for journalists deemed to be at risk.
  • To build alliance with all human right defenders working on the protection of the journalists at local, regional and international levels.
  • Sodapoj has self appointed the responsibility to assist journalist risk

·         Governments have a responsibility to assure the security and Right of Journalists. Therefore SODAPOJ is primarily oriented in the realization of such commitment.

Journalists must speak for themselves. We call on our Generation to join as a community of professionals to clarify the purpose and principles that distinguish our profession from other forms of communication.
